Home Oasis: Revamping an Ancestral Home with Zen Design

Unifying Spaces and Embracing Simplicity

The Home Oasis project was undertaken to accommodate a family of six: a lovely couple, their three children, and their elderly mother. The goal was to unify the entire space and encourage the passage of light and ample ventilation into the home. To achieve this, the designer made the openings bigger and took down obstructing walls, creating airy spaces and vistas that bring about a feeling of enlightenment to the users.

The design philosophy behind Home Oasis revolves around simplicity. The intention is to create relatable spaces that provide a sense of tranquility and harmony. The materials selected for the renovation unify old traditions in a contemporary way. The oxide of the walls and stairs, as well as the traditional designs seen in the dining table, chairs, and swing, add a touch of nostalgia while blending seamlessly with the overall aesthetic.

The house is centered around a larger dining area with a side garden, serving as the meeting point for all family members. The tropical garden on the side adds to the serene ambiance, making it the perfect spot for relaxing evenings. The design not only enhances the functionality of the space but also creates a sense of connection and togetherness.

The Home Oasis project, which started in November 2021 and was completed in June 2022, showcases the successful transformation of an ancestral home into a modern Zen retreat. Avinash Joshy's attention to detail and commitment to creating relatable spaces have earned this design the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This accolade recognizes the outstanding creativity and resourcefulness exhibited in the design, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life.
